What to Expect

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Controls Engineer to join our Tesla Energy Applications team. As a Controls Application Engineer, you will be responsible for validating the integration of Tesla batteries and controllers into utility-scale battery power plants through simulation. As a key technical member of the cross-functional Applications Engineering team within the Energy Projects group, you will be integral to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.

What You?ll Do

  • Develop and maintain power system simulation software and hardware in loop (HIL) simulation infrastructure to test and validate the power plant controller in a variety of scenarios
  • Work with firmware, hardware, and software engineers to integrate and test the power plant controller with required devices such as meters, inverters, SCADA controllers, and network systems
  • Develop test plans and procedures for validating the power plant controller integration with required devices, including meters, transformers, breakers, and customer controls
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues related to the plant control system integration
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the plant control system meets site-specific performance and reliability requirements
  • Document design decisions, test results, and issues encountered during the development and testing process

What You?ll Bring

  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with control system modelling in MATLAB Simulink or similar
  • 3+ years of experience in power flow simulation software (Powerworld, ETAP etc.) or hardware-in-loop simulation development and validation (Typhoon-HIL, OPAL-RT etc)
  • Strong understanding of power plant controller integration with required devices such as meters, inverters, SCADA controllers, and network systems
  • Strong understanding of communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, etc.
  • Familiar with basics of any programming language like C, C++, RUST, GO etc. Experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team

    • Expected Compensation

      $96,000 - $282,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
